Amitabh Bachchan on action heroes and heroism returning to Cinema with reference to his forthcoming film, Bbuddhah Hoga Terra Baap
Mr Bachchan, you had started the trend of action hero in cinema few decades ago and looks like now the trend is coming back with every hero wanting to portray an action hero.
You cannot possibly attribute the trend of heroism in Hindi cinema to me. Cinema by its very construct and nature has been heroic from the day of its invention. All our epic stories and tales of yore, from where cinema draws its inspiration, are filled with heroic deeds. To attribute this phenomena to an individual would be incorrect. Cinema would be incomplete if it did not portray elements of heroism, which is where the legendary term 'hero' has its germs. The leading men and women of a movie are called the hero and the heroine. Why ? Because they did and perform heroic deeds in film. Each film has different interpretations of the hero, as it were. There are physical, mental, philosophical examples of heroism in life and they are regularly played out in our films. Indeed in films all over. To say then that they were missing in our films and that now 'they are being brought back' is something that I would personally disagree with. A leading man who physically fights his way out of a situation from the oppressor, is as valiant and heroic as a young romantic that, despite opposition woes his girl and comes out victorious. We have had both kinds of film prevail at our box office and succeed. To say that they were missing for a long time, would be akin to saying that cinema itself was missing for a long time.
Do you want to make the most of it by doing Bbuddah Hoga...where you are portrayed as an action hero?
Movie making is an individual choice. Its creativity depends upon individual taste and desire. My director Puri Jaganath came with a concept for Bbuddah hoga tera Baap, I liked it and we went ahead and made it. I did not consider whether it was breaking any trend or following it. And neither I would believe did Puri. We just liked the idea and went ahead. Now, if our choice of subject is the desired choice of the people and the market, so be it. We are happy and charmed.
Such action-oriented heroic films are also working big time with the audience, so for how long you think the trend of such films will last? Is it here to stay?
I am not qualified to answer this question. I never know what works and how long it will continue to work. Our purpose is to make a good entertaining film and all our efforts are directed towards it.
As a producer are you also keen on making action films now?
As a producer I would want to make an, action oriented romantic item song driven emotional dramatic family audience film .. Ha !!
